See Jane Date is a classic chick lit novel – it was one of the first books to hit the American chick lit scene and helped start the ‘Single Girl in the big city’ chick lit trend. Our main heroine is Jane Gregg, an editorial assistant at a publisher in Manhattan. She has a sixth-floor walk-up studio apartment in Manhattan, a job as an editorial assistant, and a group of girlfriends (Amanda and Eloise) who meet up every Friday night for a ‘Flirt Night Roundtable’ for drinks and girl gossip.
Having been recently dumped by a boyfriend, Jane must secure a date for her cousin’s upcoming wedding, so she begins a series of blind dates. At the same time, she is forced to work closely with the girl who made her life miserable in high school – Natasha Nutley, who has written a tell-all memoir about her brush with fame.
Jane must juggle friends, crushes, blind dates, family disapproval and life in the big city. Will she find her happy ending?
I loved this book when I first read it and still do. Jane is a character that many of us can identify with and it’s endearing to watch her make her way through her life’s ups and downs. The book’s story line is perhaps a little stereotypical, however, since the book was written before many of its kind, we can’t hold that against it! There’s plenty for everyone to enjoy in this book, and watching Jane flourish at the end of the story is quite satisfying. Don’t miss this one!
